＊backfiring 逆効果 （失敗）
＊North Korea poked a finger in America's eye (アメリカの目の中に指を突っ込むようなことをした）on Independence Day.
＊It grabbed attention away from Iran
＊America spotted （探知していた）North Korea fuelling（燃料充填） a Taepodong-2 two weeks ago.
＊The missile splashed into （ポチャンと海の中に落ちて水しぶきを上げた？）the Sea of Japan a mere 40 seconds later.
＊The test was “obviously” a failure.
＊unless North Korea was seeking a very expensive way to sink random fishing boats.
＊North Korea may still lack a nuclear warhead small and light enough to put on it(a nuclear warheadを指していると思うけど、なんだか、it=cで始まる何かのようなニュアンスがないとはいえないかな).
＊Kim Jong Il, North Korea's enigmatic（意味不明な） dictator
＊In the run-up to （直前に）Tuesday’s tests South Korea had begged the North not to “put a friend in danger” by firing a missile.
＊America said a launch would be a “provocative act”（挑発的行為）.
＊Japan said it would “react severely”(毅然と対処すべきだ？？？） : it requested a meeting of the United Nations Security Council（国連安保理）, and got one, behind closed doors, on July 5th.
